PATH- BIKE EDUCATION FOR BIG ISLAND KIDS

Thanks to vital support from More than Sport, Big Island kids are growing up with PATH: the award winning Bike Education program for 4th and 5thgraders. No child left off the bike! More Than Sport will make it possible for PATH to visit every Big Island school that requests Bike Ed for their students. The PATH team arrives at a school with a Trek Travel Trailer filled with bikes and helmets sized for the kids. Kids learn bicycle safety, handling and having fun. By the end of Bike Ed, non-riders are spinning and grinning, experienced riders have greater control their bike, and teachers tell us how shy children come alive, and troublemakers focus better in the classroom. The goal of Bike Ed is to instill an entire generation of children with the desire to live a healthy, active and fulfilling life. PATH is also active in working with the Hawaiian legislature to provide a bike path system throughout all of Kona.

Mahalo, More than Sport for making Bike Ed possible for Big Island Kids.

YMCA

With help from More Than Sport, the Island of Hawaii YMCA is starting a Teen Center program for all middle school and high school teens in Kona.  This program will provide a safe place for teens that they can call their own.  The YMCA will offer daily transportation to the program, and More Than Sport will fund scholarships for many of the teens to participate.  The goal is to provide structured homework and study time; as well youth development through career paths, graffiti art, music, dance, video production and photography.  With classes such as cooking, fitness, and gardening, the program will help teach our teen’s healthy living through positive life skills.  They will have the opportunity to go to our sister sites at Camp Erdman on Oahu, and to the YMCA Peace Conference in Hiroshima Japan during the summer.

The Island of Hawaii YMCA is the only excursion-based sports camp reaching children from grades K through 10th grade.  Through YMCA day camps, Kona kids enjoy daily excursions to local beaches, are taught about marine life, cultural awareness and basic skills in a variety of sports.   YMCA camps help build friendships, and create young positive leaders for our community. The Island of Hawaii YMCA along with More Than Sport, will provide scholarships for day camps, and work together to make our programs a positive, safe and fun place for our children.
